Auto stalling and hunting when stopped
« on: 15 July 2009, 01:42:38 »

Hi all, first off, I'm new to the forum and have just bought a 2.0l 2000 W plate omega cdx estate and it seems to have a curious fault on the auto box. Starts fine and drives fine but once you stop it either idles fine (approx. 800rpm) for 30 seconds or so and then dies without warning or the revs start hunting (approx. 900 - 1400rpm) and then dies. Doesn't seem to matter whether it's in D, N or P and it sometimes feels like it doesn't really want to disengage gear when shifting from D to N or P.
Any thoughts, help or advice would be much appreciated,
Cheers,
Doug.

Check atf fluid level in box.  Whats the mileage? - may need to change fluid dependant on mileage/fluid condition.

Hi, mileage is 150,000 will check atf fluid level or maybe just flush and replace and then report back if problem persists. Does the auto box on these have a "sump like" drain plug and a side/top mounted plug for filling i.e. when full the atf fluid leaks back out of filling hole?

No drain plug just a filler/check plug.

When you say it idles roughly it could be the idle control valve(ICV)needs cleaning, do you know when it was last done :question.

Carb cleaner, let it dry and then oil the valve with some 3in1 :y

  I don't know where it is on a 2.0L as I've a V6 but it looks like this :y.
As for using WD40, it's not really a suitable lubricant so best use a light oil such as 3in1 :y.

Big thanks to everyone on the forum for their replies and input, took the car for service and gearbox top-up which didn't cure the problem, took car back and had the ICV and throttle position sensors cleaned and serviced and everything is all good with the car again and no more stalling.
