anti-roll bar grinding against fan belt pulley
« on: 10 August 2009, 20:16:31 »

Hi there everyone,

I have a 2.5TD omega, 95.  I went over a few bumps at speed and started getting a slight knocking noise, initially when reversing, but then getting worse.

I removed the plastic tray from underneath and noticed the fan belt was half chewed away where the pulley was rubbing against the anti-roll bar.

I'm sure the anti-roll bar isn't meant to be that high up.  I’m not sure why it has moved up, how much of a gap should there be between it and the pulley.  The wishbones on both sides had been replaced about 5000 miles ago so surely it’s not them again?

Any ideas?  I could really do with some photos or pictures of the anti-roll bar and it’s proximity to the fan belt pulley.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Ali

a few pictures would be great, just to give me an idea, you needn't go to any trouble, if you have the plastic undertray, don't woryy about it, it has about 6-8 molts holding it, so don't worry about it if it's not already removed.

thanks!

Not sure if worn bushes is the cause, but if it is, have a look at these.

Just seen the bushes advert, they say "No special tools are needed" but I was under the impression you needed a Ten Tonne press to fit new bushes.

IIRC you can use the original bolt and the cup up the other way to pull it back in.

Fitting the new bushes is easy. They come in two halves and just slide in either side.
Getting the old/original ones out is a bit more of an issue. There are various methods but I didn't have time to phaff about when I fitted adjustable poly-bushes to the rear of my '94 Elite so I burnt them out with oxyacetylene.

Right Ali, I've had a quick feel around mine (once it had cooled down at work), there was too much to strip off to take a pic though. I got my hand down to the bottom pulley and I can just about get my fingers between the pully and the anti-roll bar, so I'd hazard a guess at 1/2" between then but that was done by feel so hardly a precise measurement. This man has hit the nail on the head  :y

Happened to mine last year, grinding when turning right and when reversing. Engine will have dropped on the nearside. See pictures below which should show the problem I came across:

See how close the pulley was...

This could have had something to do with it... 1 bolt missing and 1 finger tight.

All I did was remove the mounting and thrash the bracket back into shae and bolt up again with thread lock. Since doing this though, one of the bolts has sheared, but it is still staying tight.

PS - You're local, so if you need a hand with anything, let me know.

First off thank you Welung666.

Secondly, the pictures below are spot on.  That is how it is, the anti-roll bar has rubbed on that pulley and chewed half the belt away.

How did you fix yours.  It's really annoying, as the local mechanic told me it was the arm again which had been changed 5000 miles ago and i bought a new one at cost.

Do I need an engine hoist?  And where in cambridge are you?  I'm in chesterton.  My email address is themightyali@hotmail.com

thanks

Hi Ali,

I am in Milton, so just down the road! To fix the problem, I did the following:

Remove undertray
Jack up car onto axle stands
Jack up engine on LHS and remove mounting from its position.
Rag the mounting with a hammer until it was back in shape (may or may not be necessary)
Find some new bolts and bolt the mounting back on with plenty of thread lock.
Bobs your Uncle

Not a terrible job, but a bit fiddly.  :y
