MAF Sensor

Car packed up today - engine stalled, would restart but not rev or idle.   Unplugged MAF sensor and runs ok.

Help plse
1. Assume ecu reverts to default map and running like this short term won't harm engine (may increase fuel consumption tho) - am I correct?
2.  Anyone got correct part nº for MAF sensor for 1998 Elite 2.5V6?

Question 1. Don't know but suspect the engine just runs richer.

Question 2. Bosch part number is 0 280 217 519 on my car which although is a late 97 is probably the same as yours. You will find the part number on the side of the MAF body near where the plug goes in.

I had similar stalling probs at junctions and on a light throttle and tried a S/H unit which made the prob worse! I bought a new aftermarket sensor off Ebay which cured the problem. It cost about £38 inc P and P from memory and included a special tool to get the old out and put a new in.

Thanks mate - it is the same part nº as yours as I've just pulled it for a looksee.

Agree re running rich - it sounds a bit that way

Special tool. the sensor is held in the MAF body by two tamper proof screws. They look like Torx but also have a "pip" in the middle. My Ebay supplier included one. DBugger's supplier probably will too. probably the same outfit!

If no special tool sure a modded screwdriver will suffice!

Sorry no intention to offend. Just presumed that was your hiTech job sweeping for bugs!

Wonder what will go wrong on your car or mine next? They seem to be tracking each each other. My water leak has cured itself but that may just be the hot weather!

Too late Chris but thanx - ordered one off ebay from these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330270562623&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT - they will accept sensible offer!! :y  Ordered late Sat night arrived early today.  Came with security torx bit.  Undid one of the torx screws the other sheared off!  Had to cut off the plastic threaded bit at the rear and drill out broken screw.  Used a 6mm cap head and nut to hold that end together.

Works ok.

Will keep you in mind Chris if I need another!!
