Manual fan speed.
« on: 24 August 2009, 10:36:02 »

My GLS appears to have a mind of it's own concerning the fan speed. The auto rarely seems to reduce the fan speed even though the cabin appears to be down to temperature, this is annoying, but even over riding the auto by manually adjusting the fan speed also doesn't seem to reduce the fan speed as ordered. Anyone come across this before or is my shed unique.

Mine has also just destroyed the idler pulley on the aux belt resulting in a recovery. This just 2 days before changing it as a precaution. Oh I wish I had my Senator back.

The facelift climate control does benefit from a firmware upgrade in respect of the fan control, IME.

There is also a setting available via Tech 2 that disables automatic control of the fan speed once a manual selection has been made, and that made a big improvement for me.

Belated, I know, but it's worth taking off the aux belt idler and packing the bearing with a bit of grease whenever working in that area as they do tend to dry out.

Didn't know about that one Kev. Might have to have a word with Jaime at Newent and get mine done. ::) I had the climate upgrade done which improved the system but I find it pretty annoying sometimes when the fans won't turn down manually.

I just came across it when playing with a tech 2. It's called something vague like "Auto fan program Enable / Disable". I think it appeared after upgrading to the latest climate firmware.

The effect I have noticed is:

If you just press auto, leave everything on automatic the fan behaves as before, i.e. if you select a temperature much colder / hotter than the current temp. the fan speed increases, and as the car reaches the selected temperature the fan slows.

If you manually set the fan speed using the 2 buttons to the left of the climate panel the speed you set persists until you press Auto again. In other words you can change the temperature and air movement settings as much as you like but if you've turned the fan speed right down it will stay where you've set it.

In contrast, the way it was before, you could manually turn the fan speed down, but change anything else and the fan speed would revert to the automatic setting, which I found very irritating.

I can't stand the fan being high unless I'm very cold / hot so I just set it to its' minimum speed now and that's where it stays.

A conventional 3 dial heater would be even better IMHO. >:(

Agreed. :y All this combined with the daylight/sun sensor at the bottom of the windscreen, I think they've tried to give the climate too much intelligence.
As you said, I prefer the fan running on low unless temperatures are extreme.

I've just seen and replied to your PM - cheers Kev. :y

Please excuse my ignorance here, but how do I sort out getting this tech 2 thing done. Is it dealer, downloadable, witchcraft?

That is exactly how I think the fans should perform, they did on the Senators, Vectra etc.

Tech2 is essentially a diagnostics computer that plugs into your car. It's used for reading fault codes when problems arise and can also be used to change certain settings of the car controlled by software such as climate control and auto gearbox. Kevin Wood (who posted above) has one of these and is also based in Hampshire so might be worth dropping him a PM.

Won't be around for the next week and a half or so, but after that we can sort something out if you like?

i liked my senator, but not as much as my gsi 3000 24v, my fan will listen, but on eco the window steams, got no water loss so matrix is ok. im trying to train it by ignoring it like you do with a dog, not sure training a griffen is the same though!
