Windscreen fitted this morning - solar one??
« on: 26 August 2009, 12:30:40 »

Hi - as i mentioned in another thread yesterday I had my screen replaced today, it seems they didn't have my original screen in stock so I have been "upgraded" to some kind of Solar Screen that looks like it is almost reflective, the fitter said that it was an option on a lot of elite's but can anyone confirm?  Mine has the rain sensor under the rear view mirror if that helps...

On the plus side he seems to have done a good job - apart from re-using the exterior trim - I will see what I think when I road test it later.

Also just ordered some Aero blade wipers to eliminate any chance of wiper screech!!  :y

The aero style wipers don't work that well on omega screen due to the shape of it.

If yours are noisy, they are at the end of their life. I'd replace with standard wipers

Not true Jaime. :P They may not wrap completely around the curvature of the screen when at rest on the passenger side, but this is negligable and doesn't affect the clearing of the screen. I've been using them for 20 months and I find them superb and wouldn't go back to standard wipers. :y

I've just gone on to flat blades as the standard ones weren't clearing properly on the drivers side... Been like it since I got the car and 3 different sets of blades (and 3 different manufacturers).

Fitted flat blades and they are instantly better. I'm not sure I'm keen on the look but they certainly work :y :y

beleive vx call it a heat reflective screen...? Not sure if thats the same as you have, autoglass call it something else iirc. The ones i have seen(they are rare) have a purpley blue finish or colour to them and seem slightly darker because of it. Only thing is sat navs are said not to work if placed on the dash area, as the gps signal cant get through.

I tried to wing it with auto glass to get one but they wouldnt have it saying it would not work with the rain sensor. Which i knew was BS but couldnt prove it at the time. Any chance you could post up or pm me a pic of the numbers printed on the glass and a pic of the rain sensor area? Or any part numbers you may have please, prety prety please? :-)

I have a set of valio, aero blade style, wipers and very much like the design due to the lack of pressure points given by the springs on the originals. Have seen a few cars with bad scratches in line with the springs. I know, change them first before they get that worn. But why have the problem at all?
However, i find 2 things that do bother me,

1 mine do screech randomly! Either due the the design or ware on the little spindle they clip onto on the wiper arm itself, mine seem quite loose when clipped on.
2. Due the the adapted design of the mounting system the wiper arm sits quite high from the screen meaning they sit out in the air stream as it flows off the bonnet causing some wind noise. No biggy, but can be hurd in what is a fairly quiet car and nothing the radio cant fix. :-)

Bob, what make blades do you have?
Ta. :-)

On the negative side...If you use a SATNAV....it will
no longer work....not if mounted on the dash anyway.

The signal can't get through a "solar" windscreen.

RAC/Autoglass did the same "free upgrade" for me two days before my hols. SATNAV was buggered as a result SO....they had to change it back to a normal windscreen. Initially they reused the old trims but they were renewed completely when they carried out the "down grade".

The Manager was fuming as basically they had just ruined a perfectly good "solar screen" after only 2 days of use. I tried to use the SATNAV on the side window but it was exremely awkward, dangerous and almost impossible to read so close to my head..

Sorry to be the barer of bad news.

Hi Duggs - the Sat Nav is factory fit, it shows a colour map on the in-dash display and just tested it and all seems fine.  Tested the phone signal from the car phone and that seems ok too.

Chrisgixer - if you PM me your email address I will take some pics as per your very polite request and get the part numbers from the copy invoice :)

As for the wipers - I asked the Autoglass man for his opinion and he had no doubt the Bosch flat blades are worth the money and seem to last longer as well so may cost more but last longer than the traditional style  :y

Hi Darren, pm sent. :-)

Rest assured the in car sat nav will be fine as you say. Its the portable dash mounted jobs that suffer as they sit directly under the screen. Tomtoms and the like.

I guess you would have noticed if the rain sensor wipers where working or not?

You can buy an add on aerial for most Sat Navs to allow them to function ;)

Yes Chris the weather has been kind enough to rain most of the evening so I have tested the sensor and all works as it should  :y

Just fitted my new Bosch Aero-blades and used the hose to test them - they seem to do a fantastic job of clearing the water away!! only one minor snag is the passenger side blade doesn't sit flat onto the curved corner of the screen when it is the park position - but I can live with that.  :y

Chris you have an email with the pics of the sensor you asked for.  :y

One of the points I mentioned in one of my above posts. Mind you, I've seen standard wipers on Omega's that do the same. ::)
