Right, I know I've been here before and so I apologise for the thread but I am confused.

To replace my own, do I need clocks with exactly the same numbers? Or does the ident just need to be the same? Ie, after the Opel part number on the barcoded label are usually two letters, mine are PR. A friendly parts bloke showed me the EPC for the clocks and there are all sorts of different idents.

If anyone could clear that up would be great

As far as I know, you need the right one, or your speedo will be well out. I hope someone will confirm.

What is the right one though? Does it have to be EXACT, or can the numbers differ slightly?

EPC lists the variants as letters, mine being PR - does this mean PR is ones with the EXACT same numbers as mine? Or can they differ but still have the same letter ident? And if they do will they work?

Best stick to whatever letter code you have at the moment if possible. The nubers are probably just the production batch codes (not certain though, so don't quote me on that! :-[ )
The speedo clocks are pretty much standard accross the range, but there are other differences such as being lower rev counter on the diesels, and the lower numbers on the temp gauge on the 4cyl models.
If you swap them over with the wrong ones they will probably still work but you will get false readings from the dials.
Then there is the warning lights and DIS to think about. The feautures fitted to the cars differ from model to model, and year to year, so thats why the clocks have different codes on, to make sure that DIS will show up the correct information and that the right warning bulbe are fitted (although I think these can be added or removed manually as required.)
If you need new clocks I think you should be ok just sticking to the letter codes.

OK, 3 different ages (prefacelift, minifacelift and full facelift), the first one is incompatible electrically with other 2.

within these, there are physical variances, eg coolant temps, revs and speedos.

If yours is post 1998, and you can find another post 1998 set whith the same markings on coolant, tacho and speedo, then it can be programmed to your car via tech2

Toby & I discovered that the clocks in his car have a marking ending 706. I've got a spare 706 and 2 spare 707's. The 707's are the same as the 706 in all respects bar one - & that is the addition of a diode which in Haynes seems to be for the Diesel's alternator light. The 707's however have a date stamp that is older than the 706's. All are V6 clocks as they go upto 160. I know that my spare 706 came from a 2.5V6 CDX and the 707 came from an older 2.5V6 Tourer. Interestingly the 706 has space on the PC track for the diode - but it isn't fitted.
