Air con wont work
« on: 10 September 2009, 23:47:46 »

Hiiiii Went down the A5 today for a trip to Glastonbury, nice warm day and the bleedin aircon is dead.
I did a quick check of the 30 amp fuse (no 33) and looked to see if any buttons had stuck in, but all seems ok.
Got back late tonite so I havnt had a thorough check to see if eveything else is ok but so far all other electrics seem to be fine.
Any Ideas as what I might be looking for ?????
Thanks Russ

Get along to a local Kwik-fit. They do a pressure check and re-gas. If it doesn't work, you don't pay.

I used them when mine stopped working a few weeks ago. They advised there was plenty of gas in system so no point in proceeding with re-gas.
I have a compressor issue by the look of things :'(, but I do have a spare compressor on my old Elite, and that was working fine when it was on the road.
Now it's my spares bin.  ;D

If the unit is low on gas does the whole thing shutdown as it isnt powering up at all.

Yep, if it's low on gas the compressor will not kick in.

before you go open the bonnet look to the nearside front of the engine and you will see the aircon unit, there is a pulley on the front see if it turns freely by hand, if it does chances are it is the gas, if it doesnt dont bother going to kwik fit, it will cost you dearly as that is one of the main components of the system. I have a stone chip in the Condensor on mine and over time the gas drops, Halfords sell gas in a tin with connectors and gauge for about £35 and you can do it yourself.

Good Luck

Hiiii solved it, It was just a fuse. I checked the aircon fuse (large 30amp) but looks like there is another one (small 30amp).
Thanks for your help and i'll bare the tins of gas for the future. No doubt it'll ned topping up at some point.

Avoid these DIY kits like the plague. The A/C system needs a specific amount of gas and oil.
Not sure if Halfrauds, or any retailer can still sell them. There is a huge fine (around £20k) for knowingly releasing refrigeration gas to the atmosphere. If not already in place, there are plans to ban these DIY kits.

Glad it's sorted. Where was the other fuse located ?
