ANY ADVICE?? ..Rear clunking and uneven tyre wear
« on: 26 September 2009, 12:58:12 »

I have a clunking from the rear passenger side suspension when driving over bumps or potholes...sounds as if the top of the shock is loose but I've checked that and it isn't. I thought the spring might be broken but that also looks fine.

The inside edge of the tyre is badly scrubbed, with plenty of tread left on the rest of the tyre  :(

I've jacked it up but can't see anything...anyone know what it is likely to be??

I have the same clunking and Chrisgixer diagnosed a worn shock absorber - which I confirmed today when I took the rear wheel off to check the rear pads and the bottom of the shocker is damp from the fluid leaking out.

The uneven tyre wear maybe something different - could the tyre/wheel have been on the front and someone has swapped it over to maximise the life of the tyres?

Dont know if the Omega is the same as the Carlton layout.  But they used to suffer from the rear donut bush wearing.  I think as the rubber goes it allows 2 different metal bits to make contact especially going over bumps and small pot holes etc.  Not sure if I ever suffered tyre wear.  If it is the same on the Omega and they /it has gone, would then be best to replace both sides. :y

Have you counted the turns on the spring? Just that you may have lost a bit from the top but it could look perfect.

Usually the pigtail on the bottom of the spring snaps and you can't see it easily (MOT testers miss it!)

its a bugger to describe noises. A clunking to one person is a banging to another. Or whatever, in my experience with elite sl shocks they bang off bumps when the oil leaks out and all damping is lost allowing the wheel to bounce off and bang back down on the road surface. Cant say if your Mv6 shocks behave the same as i've no experience with them, but i would think it likely they would go the same way. If thats what your problems is of course.

Also worth checking the spare wheel is still strapped down tightly, busted springs as mentioned and rear bushes, although i've replaced both of these and neither made any noise apart from a creek from the bushes when maneuvering over a slope when parking or reversing. But depends how badly they have failed i guess?

The shockers aren't that old really and no leaking. I would say it's a definate metalic clunk too. There's been some donutty typre creaking for some time now so maybe one of those has gone.

I jacked the car up I grabbed the spring and gave it a good shove etc but there didn't appear to be any give, I'll give it some closer inspection.

I assume the pigtail is where the spring flattens out Andy?

Cheers Guys  :y

the spring will not be loose even if broken as the weight of the car is on it.  look carefully at the ends: the springs thin to a slimmer end.  you need to check that all turns are there.  the top and bottom of the spring look the same so compare top and bottom and left and right.  chances are you've got a broken spring (in which case you are in luck cos you can replace for less than £100 a pair)

bushes more likely to affect rear tyre ware if at all. Shocks wont affect that obviously. And dont think springs will either.

Its easy enough to remove the triangular plate and test the bush by sticking a meaty screw driver in the centre spacer and levering it about. If the rubber comes away from the metal cup it needs changing.

While your under there, may as well have a look at the bushes at the back of the dif. Dif to sub frame rarely fail i'm told, but sub frame to chassis do.

Have to say though, not sure what would cause a metalic clunk out of all that lot, IME anyway.

Are you sure there's nothing loose in the boot or something daft? Failing that something loose on the car. Difficult without seeing or hearing it.

one other thing to check is the top mounts on the shocks if gone or worn will cause knocking noise easily checked just jack wheel off the ground a little and putting a bar under the wheel just rock the wheel up wards while looking and listening and yes faulty shocks will cause tyre wear but usually patchy wear not on shoulder hth
