Radiator cooling fan
« on: 29 September 2009, 08:17:28 »

Am I correct in remembering that the main radiator fan would normally continune to run after ignition is switched off to bring the radiator and engine core temp down,if high temp of coolant.
Reason I ask is for last few days have noticed temp whilst driving creaps slightly beyond 95 and has reached 97.5,but when turn ignition off cannot hear main fan running, which I am sure I used to .
Temp from stationery(parked) is pulled down when engine is started but never recall temp getting as high.
Coolant was fully drained and refilled less than 4 months ago.

Yes amba the fan will remain on after switching off and removing keys if engine is hot enough :y.

Have you tried running up engine with the header tank cap off(REPLACE BEFORE IT GETS TO HOT)and burping the system by squeezing the coolant pipes in case you have any trapped air :-/.

Thanks for info,Pete Elite.....really strange thing is today fan has been coming on and all seems to be back to normal.??
Perhaps the sensor had got stuck or an electrical contact had worked loose and now reset...will keep an eye (and ear) on situation.....might replace temp fan sensor at some point incase it is playing up.

It strikes me that this could be caused by a failing relay becoming intermittent in operation or by a failing cooling fan or by the thermoswitch in the radiator.

There is a guide to the testing the fan operation somewhere on here but I can't find it at the moment  :(
