autobox adjustment
« on: 11 October 2009, 18:48:45 »

Hi there guys.  I've read that there is an adjustment that csan be made to the autobox.  Don't know what it adjusts though.  My car is slipping badly in firat, you just get loads of juddering through the whole car and then you start to move slowly into the path of the artic that's coming towards you at high speed.  is this terminal or can the first gear clutch/brake band be adjusted?

if anyone in scotland (i'm in perthshire) has an autobox for sale i'd be very interested.  preferably an AR35 as the td tends to shred the 25 or so i believe.

met somebody today with the same problem on a 2.2 petrol, we came to the conclusion that due to his mileage it was probably the g/box on its way out, there is an adjustment but its a bit hit & miss to what i can gather, i would [& have] opted for an AR35 for peace of mind. :(

Might also be low on oil, I know vx say it's a lifetime type thing with the oil but I'd check it just in case, plus it would be a lot cheaper than a new box

Its a TD - if its covered more than 120k, the gearbox has done its time - throw in an AR35, and get the bugger chipped :y

My intention is to get an AR35 for it at some point, but they seem to be pretty thin on the ground.  I had a look on ebay and they were all going for around 200 quid and there weren't any remotely close by.  I was hoping to be able to get a couple more thousand miles out of mine if it was at all possible.
I did an oil change about 500 miles ago (around a week's driving) and that made no difference at all.  The car's been off the road for a couple of weeks as it's a pretty dangerous situation and I've been using the landrover, but 15mpg is a bit hard to stomach when i'm doing 100 miles a day so the omega's goin to have to go back on the road.  Is there a how-to anywhere on the site showing how to do the adjustment?  even if i can only get a couple of thousand miles it will buy me a little more time to try and get another gearbox in my price range.  the other alternative is to cut my losses and scrap the car.

When the sump is removed there is a dome held on with 3 or 4 bolts. Remove it and there is a threaded screw with a lock nut, release it then tighten the screw to 5nm torque, back off five turns and then tighten the lock nut, this sets the brake band. Replace the dome then it`s a gearbox re-fill :y

My 96 prefacelift has got the type of Gearbox that you can't adjust the software on, my ? is if i fitted a later AR35 box to it would it mean i can update the software or is this only possible on later models meaning is it the electronics on the car and not just the age of the box?

No you couldn't, the software upgrade is related to the gearbox ecu adn not the physical box it self

brilliant, cheers, I'll give it a go.  Hopefully it will give me a few extra miles of driveability and give me a chance to get a decent AR35.  I was looking at the schematics earlier for the gearbox.  I didn't realise the first gear clutch was a brake band, I thought they went out with the dinosaurs haha.  Does anyone know if it can be bought as a seperate part?

cheers again

Just drove the car for the first time  in a few weeks and tried the winter mode. The take off didn't seem all that bad, so might be a useful thing to remember!  The car seems to have more power now that it has a thermostat, certainly runs at a better temperature, but i'm not sure that is not just because i'm used to the landy again.  One thing is for sure, the stalling is worse than ever.  Even with the throttle pedal tied up to raise the idle speed, it is cutting out on EVERY corner that you don't have your foot on the throttle..
