Is there a way to get the ashtray out and put back in easily?  have the wooden part that is stuck out on my elite and can't see any way of getting it back in?

The unit is held in by a single philips screw. There is a spring loaded metal flap that you have to hold out of the way to allow you to slide a philips screwdriver in to undo it.

When you get the unit out you will see a fragile little plastic latch. On mine the latch has broken :( I suspect that yours probably has too.

If it hasn't broken, any chance of taking a photo so I can see how the little plastic latch fits.
