I am going to take the fuel tank off first chance I get, can anyone tell me what's involved, ie. does the exhaust have to come off etc? I have looked in the maintenance guides but found nothing. Car is  2.2 tdi cdx. saloon facelift. thanks.

Not the worst job in the world.  You shouldnt need to completely remove the exhaust, just drop it off its rubber mountings to give a bit more space.  The tank is held to the car with two metal straps.  These should have 1 bolt at each end.  Check around the tank and find the filler in the rear drivers side arch.  Disconnect the jubilee clips and loosen the pipes.  There is a breather pipe as well, dont forget this.  Support the tank and remover the straps.  I found a decent sized sheet of mdf sat on a trolley jack works quite well.  Lower the tank slowly without letting it fall off the jack.  You will need to disconnect the fuel lines and wiring, although this could be done through the inspection plate in the boot.  That should be about all you need to know  :y

Good luck with it

I never knew the 2.2 had no pump in the tank, if you still have the inspection hatch, then you don't need to drop the tank. The filter must be cleaned, mine was as bad on the inside as the outside. I used one of those cheapo syphon pumps, to get rid of all the sediment in the tank.

Many thanks for all your help, I did not know there was an inspection plate in the boot till I read a few post's. So when I checked, I thought to myself I may just manage without taking the tank off.
