Powered Steering noise
« on: 24 January 2010, 13:36:17 »

Hi guys,

hi have an 02 omega estate cdx auto. when the steering is on almost full lock there is a strange noise which has just started. the steering feels sort of juddery as well. I have checked the manual as I thought it might be low on powered steeering fluid. However I can't find any mention of if and where to top it up in the manual. :-[
Can any of you guys first tell me if it takes any kind of fluid for the steering and if it does where is the top up cap.

Your help is much appreaciated.

I had the same problem and it was caused by running the engine with no power steering fluid in the reservoir. I ended up changing my power steering pump.

The reservoir is the thing with the red box round it in this picture

Hi Mark, yes it does sound a bit like the noise you described.

Thanks for pointing out where the resevior is on the omega Scottie. there is no mention of it it the manual. Tel mel will any power steering fluid do the job or is there a specific type i need.

cheers

hi guys I've just checked the resevoir and it is a lttle down, but i can't see any markings on the outside to gauge weather it needs a top up. can you tell me if it should be right up to the top or whereabouts the level should be. Many thanks guys.

Markings are on the dipstick which is part of the lid :y

Think you have to use ATF fluid from memory?

If the fluid is ok and not low, its a weak power steering pump, quite a common fault on this model.
Mine does the same. You can replace the pump but i understand its a bit of a pig to do.

I didn't find it too bad. Apart from losing one of the bolts that holds it in, it was a fairly easy job :y

does seem to be the common failure with pas on the omega, the pump is suprisingly small.

the fluid is dexron 2 for pas  (not dexron 3 which is for the gearbox and dont let any parts man tell you differant)
