Self Leveling Suspension

Hi All

I have a problem with my self leveling suspension. Its an elite estate and recently it has gone to max height and stayed there. i booked it in at my local dealers in Liegh and in true fashion they said they had reset the suspension, which they had but could not provide an explanation of the fault. Needless to say a couple of days later it has returned. I spoke to the dealers today and it is going in on Wednesday again. I gave the guy a flee in his ear, I said I dont want you to fit random parts until you fix because I wont stand for it again as my last Omega had £1000 worth of parts fitted  before they found it was a £30 sensor. The guy even on the phone call suggested it may need a pair of shocks, I said tell me how can that affect the self leveling part when they have gone to full extension surely it is with the control system, either the sensor on th back axle or some other part that interpret ates the signal and controls the compressor and dump valve (if there is one)
Any help would be appreciated to point the dealer in the right direction.

Your not on your own, there was another post in the last few weeks if you have a search, that also referenced my experience. Unfortunately we have all come up against vauxhall service agents who don't understand how to fault find this problem. In my case they did the 'swap this swap that' approach until the bill was about £1000. I ended up taking them to task and getting it reduced. Common wisdom on the forum is that it is usually the switch which has suffered corrosion. Unfortunateyl there appears to be no direct experience of fixing this on the forum. If you want to have a crack yourself, I would go for the switch first. (I belive the suspension level can be reset by removing the tube on the suspension strut and allowing the damper to go down.. I also believe the compressor is situated in the front drivers side near the bumper - if I'm wrong, I know someone will correct me pretty quickly!)

You are correct in your assumption.

The system comprises a compressor and a release valve to raise and lower the suspension, these are all located in the drivrs wheel arch.

There is a also a sensor which, on post mid 97 cars, has an integrated controller and is mounted on the drivers side rear trailing arm near the diff.

First thing to check would be the state of the linkage, is it free to move etc?

But, this controller can be accessed by tech2 and checked for operation!

New shocks.....I dont think so!

Fixed it with a new compressor £800 under the front nearside wheel arch.

I'd have gone for a pre-owned from a breaker I think ... :(

Ouch indeed... And I doubt that was actually at fault as it was only doing what it was told by the control unit :o :o ::) ::)

bloody dealers, its just guess work surely? seems to me the only thing that is fairly sure to be working is the pump, proven by the pump clearly pumping up. If anything i would look at the release valve,provided tech2 showed no fault, although i've not looked at the set up in the front wing, i have wondered if it may be integral with the pump?(now whos guessing? ::) ;D )

That may be the case... But I bet you could fix it without replacing the whole pump ;) ;)

That may be the case... But I bet you could fix it without replacing the whole pump ;) ;)
very possibly, or may still be easier and def cheaper to wack a second hand one in as previously mentioned.

Blimey  :o

My SLS was also pumping up to full height - turned out to be a broken spring on the rear drivers side, and only broken at the the top so it wasn't obvious!

Hope you have fixed it now.   :y
