When my 2.5TD was running (those were the days :-[ :-[) I had a rattle from the front of the engine. I was sure it was the tensioner mechanism. It has a bush at one end which on mine had gone oval shaped.

But after unsuccessfully searching around for a replacement I decided to get a bit deeper into it and discovered it was the power steering pump had become loose. Tightened it up (mounting bolts at the rear of the pump, 11mm head IIRC) and it was quite as anything. Worth a try, doesn't cost anything????
