problem on starting tick over
« on: 20 February 2010, 15:14:54 »

hi
i have scoured your pages and can't find a relevant question so here goes, on starting up the car i have noticed a flucuation in the tickover revs also when it is doing this the dashboard lights flucuate aswell as main headlights and interior lights  :-/ this only happens for about 30-45 secs sometimes longer seems to coincide with the choke being on.
any ideas/remedies?
thanks
btw i drive a 1999 mini facelift 2.5 saloon petrol

Don't think I've read this one before...  Sounds electrical, given the light fluctuations etc.

Would be looking initially at all relevant connections such as Idle Control Valve (right side of engine, near the battery) as this generally controls the revs.  Mass Airflow Sensor is part of the bagpipe plumbing at the front of the engine between air filter, radiator and engine.

As the mayhem lasts for 30 - 40 seconds or so, check if the Secondary Air Injection pump under the nearside front wing, beneath the arch liner, is intact, both electrically and the air lines.

No guarantees that this will sort anything, but its something to do!  And the more cleverer folks will be along later to give an alternative (or more accurate) diagnosis....   ;)

Also, have a check of fault codes and post up the numbers.....   :y

ok thanks for that i will have a look at the things you have suggested and post some codes.                       i know it is a weird fault but really seems to conincide with the choke going off, when the revs drop everything evens out and lights stop fluctuating in time with the revs going up and down  :-/

Knackered SAI pump. Disconnect it under passenger wing or pull fuse by battery
