Can anybody tell me if the sampling fan is a replaceable part in the event of failure, and also is there a sensor for temperature inside the cabin anywhere and if so whereabouts is this located and is it easy to change.......thanks as always!

Almost anything on a car is replaceable; it just depends how easy and how much it costs to do so.
But yes, I'm sure the sampling fan is easily replaceable. There was another post recently which mentioned it could be replaced with a simple computer fan (must mean chipset, I don't think the usual 80mm or 12omm fan would fit!)
As for the temp sensor, same applies but would probably have to get one off a breaker, or new.

I think, on my mini facelift, both the fan and temp sensor are located behind the small vent in the shape of a triangle, below the climate controls.

The sampling fan cannot be officially replaced the climate panel comes as one very expensive part (about £600 ish new). However some have managed to solder in a small replacement 12v computer fan purchased at Maplin. Personally I would save yourself a lot of bother and buy a second hand one off ebay I paid £35 for a one from a 1999 model in good nick. The thermister sensor is right behind the fan and I think there are a further 2 temp sensors in each of the front air vents. A final point there are two types of identical looking panels the break point is 1998 later panels are denoted with a yellow dot on the back. If you use the wrong one you will get a -- -- error on the displays although it does appear to still work.

Heres the issue....its not the fan that fails, its the drive circuit on the board......

Anyway, I replace it with a small 25mm x 10mm fan as used in some computers (e.g. basic graphic cards etc). I screw this to teh duct that the normal fan mated upto and then wire the supply wires (you can snip the tacho lead off) ....its the outer 2 holes that connected to the original fan from memory.

Not hard, fractioanly more niosey but, you cant hear it with the engine running.
