Gearbox Oil Change --- Good Price??
« on: 03 March 2010, 23:01:25 »

Hi all,

My local Vx Dealer has just quoted me £81 inc VAT, to do a gearbox oil change on my baby.

Is this a good price or am I being ripped off?

My baby is: 2.5ltr Auto Elite Facelift Model.

Thanks for your views!! :D

The oil and new gaskets are about £30 I think ...  so about £50 labour.

Not too bad really .. as it'll take you over an hour to shower yourself clean of the 'orrible smelly muck !!!

 :) :) :) :)

Edit .. I wonder if they have a way of changing ALL the oil .. as the "drop the sump" version we do only changes about half ???

thats too cheap from a main Vx dealer, is suspect thats just going to be a 'suck out the old ATF, pump in some new'

Can't see them dropping the sump, changing the filter and gasket for that  :-/

Hi,

The Vx dealer told me they would drop the sump off, drain the oil, put it all back together and re-fill.
This would take about 1hr 30mins.

My car has done 163,000 so far, and I've only just put a towbar on to tow our caravan. I was advised to change the oil because of the extreme temp that the gearbox gets to, pulling something.

If only some of the gearbox oil is changed, will that be good enough?

He didn't mention changing (or cleaning) the filter.

Nonetheless it sounds cheap.  If genuine I would go for it.

Fluid would cost you about 25-30 quid. Gaskets 10-20 quid I think (less if you go for the Loctiite liquid goo).  Then there is the messiness of the job. ::)

Would have thought that price would be for parts only. Hour and a half labour extra

I was quoted £190 all inclusive with filter by an auto transmission specialist, They did say that they do a 'double' fluid change to eliminate as much of the old fluid as possible.

Still seems to be quite a difference in price from yours.
