i'm giving you a hard time pal! I have just used that little piece of cable when testing at the wheel. When all seemed ok I reassembled and then applied the hand brake, which is when I got the problems. Has made me think about your comment about the cable itself being seized. It's a long shot but all I can think of.

Ok. Thanks to sjc and Mrs2112 I have now established that applying the handbrake inside the car is having no effect at the wheel. The other side is perfect, and the handbrake is fully on at 6 notches. Must be somethign about the actual cable to that side. Any ideas? Can the cable seize inside the guide? I would assume that if it was broken, applying pressure to the exposed part at the rear of the wheel would cause the cable to come loose from the guide end.
Stumped! :'(

So you are getting no cable movement at the one side at all?

I'd say that's a seized cable all right.  They usually tend to fray at the exposed part rather than seize but it's not impossible that it has.

Also, I don't think they are that expensive to be honest and I'd say it's one of the parts that doesn't really matter whether you get a pukka VX part or a pattern one.  But check the prices of both - I've seen genuine VX being cheaper (trade club) than pattern parts.

Ask AndyC on here for a price, he's the VX parts man and a more helpful bloke you're unlikely to find.

When I tightened the handbrake initially, thinking that was the problem, there were no issues and I didn't suspect there was anything wrong.
Do you think it is simply a matter of slackening off at the compensator bar, disconnecting at the hub, and then trying to manually manoeuvre it to free it up? I don't imagine WD would make any difference?

Nah, if the inner cable has seized inside the outer cable the you'll never get it working properly.  Or if you do, it'll seize again in a few weeks - the inner cable has a plastic coating and once that wears off it's dead.
