No power up of air con compressor?
« on: 09 April 2010, 00:54:05 »

Hello All,My problem is this, last thursday I had the A/C system on Miggy re-gassed. When I collected the car it was ice cold and everything seemed OK.Yesterday for the 1st time I set the system to LO and didn't get a chilled response and the compressor to power up.Before I contact the garage, can any of you knowledgable guys tell me how to test the compressor to make sure it is at least getting a power supply, or any other method to diagnose the systems problem, regards to all,and Thanks  :y :y

It could be a multitude of reasons, this is one of my experiences.
I had the same kind of thing a few years back. Great for the first day but following day, no chill.
Found out the condensor radiator was porous. It was passing the pressure test but would allow the gas to escape slowly over the  few hours.
Took the rad off my spares car, swapped them over, back for a re-gas, and it's been fine for about 3yrs.
Well, until a few weeks back...but now it's stopped doing it's thing again. No pressure, so I have a leak somewhere.
You could try eliminating loss of pressure with just a short press of the inlet/outlet valve core.
Also check the clutch on the front of the compressor is still there. Another A/C issue I've had is the centre bolt worked loose and the clutch was AWOL.

OK,Thanks Turk,The compressor clutch would appear to be alright I'll take miggy back and have a pressure test I think they can do a gas leak search with a special detector and I think they have a dye in the system to help locate leaks Ill let you know the outcome thanks for your interest :y :y

When I had this problem the garage tested the system using a 'sniffer' and a dye too and then they changed the condenser for me. After it stopped working again I took it back and had it regassed, having to oay again of course, and it did not last long again! I took it somewhere else and they had a quick look using a blacklight torch and it was the front compressor seal that was the problem. They said there was no evidence at all of the condenser having leaked!
You can test the electric clutch of the compressor by getting underneath and unplugging the connector at the back of it, its on the bottom, then putting  12v directly into the compressor. If it is active the clutch will 'clack'. If not its a dodo.
It s dog of a job on a v to change the compressor!
