Pads/Discs/Springs...
« on: 11 April 2010, 22:55:20 »

Hi guys,

Im just about to undertake the following next weekend which I presume should be pretty straightforward, but not having the omega haynes manual just want to ask if I need any 'non stock' tools.

2000 Elite V6 saloon.

Front Pads
Rear Pads
Rear Discs
Rear Coil Springs

Here are my questions

a) Do I need any special tools for these jobs? I.e odd tools. Never had a vauxhall before. I have every socket, spanner etc under the sun. Also have a spring compressor for the springs
b) What size is the nut for the rear and front hubs? Presume these need removing to remove discs.
c) My rear springs have snapped, both, is this common on these cars?
d) As regards pads, discs, springs, would you guys always go OE? I had a quote for parts from local motor factors and prices were great.

Thanks in advance.

Might be teaching you to suck eggs here ... but have a read of this ..

Rear brake disc incorporates handbrake shoes .. it is not a common setup.

If you know about it .. ignore me .. if you don't .. worth knowing !  :)

Fronts are dead simple .. and I've never done the springs so don't know !!!

Springs are a piece of cake, just follow MDTM's howto in the guides section.
If you have access to a nut gun it makes it easier still.

Rear springs snapping is common unfortunately.

When I changed the rear springs on my last Omega I vaguely remember having to loosen the bolts on the differential and subframe to allow the subframe to drop far enough to get the new springs in. I couldn't get near the springs with my spring compressors so I wouldn't waste time trying.

There are some excellent maintenance guides with pictures here Maintenance Guide Index

Brilliant guys thanks!

I actually didnt even bother looking at the guides as other forums im a member of you have to be a paid member to see guides so a bonus here!

What about parts? Are we a fan of OE here or motor factor parts ok?

Generally the usual concensus is genuine GM for brakes (get Tradeclub for discount at dealers - just join if in trade, or join an affiliated club for £20pa).

Ring springs, KYB from Sutton Auto Factors is whats on the back of mine.

Should say, handbrake shoes, if worn, are too expensive from dealer, go pattern for them.

If changing front pads, its likely you'll need new wear sensors.
