Oil from gearbox breather
« on: 12 April 2010, 10:55:30 »

Just had a call from a member who has noticed some ATF coming from the gearbox breather.

It appears that some ATF is coming out of the breather, only when driven very hard.

I did an ATF change on the car a few weeks ago and the old fluid was OK - but brown, but no cause for concern.

There are no symptoms or strange behaviour other than this.

Is there a possibility that I may have just put very slightly too much ATF in?

I wouldn't have thought so as I've done more of these than I can count!

Other than that - could some other problem in the box be causing it to over pressurise?

It's going for an ATF level check so we should know more then...

Is the breather tube the right length and "fixed" at the correct height?

Is the breather in the "right" place .. ie .. still way up high just under the scuttle ??? If it has "dropped" it will vent easier or even syhpon ???

Just a quick thought ... :(

EDIT ... SNAP .. :)

The first question I asked was about the position of the breather - as I've seen it before when this has caused leaks.

Advice given to cable-tie in upright position  :y

Was it in the correct position James?

I had a very similar issue with the breather pipe location. It had been dislodged whilst doing some work on HBV and was allowing it to cause a leak ontop of the steering box adjuster hex nut.
I originally thought I had a problem with the steering box but on closer investigations it turned out to be this pipe.
I assumed it only allowed vapour/air to vent, but mine also seems to let a bit of ATF out..never had problems with gearbox, and fluid was replaced just over a year ago..perhaps I should investigate levels aswell.

I'm not entirely sure - sounds like it was at plenum level though, which should be high enough?

I've advised to cable tie as high as possible, and re-test.

Any sign of oil in the coolant

What are you thinking Mark -

Split in the gearbox oil cooler - and the pressure of the cooling system increasing gearbox pressure?

Thinking its worth ruling out.....you would get gearbox oil in the coolant system when the car is running (as the oil is higher pressure than the coolant) but, water would drain back to the gearbox when engine is off (coolant pressure stays high for a long period of time after engine shutdown....yet oil pressure will drop off quickly).

Hence, as rare as the cooler is to fail, its easy to rule out.

Otherwise its a breather location check required  :y

Just a thought, could it be a fluid compatability problem?
