2.5 Tappet noise?
« on: 12 April 2010, 20:25:03 »

Hi ,I have just bought a 2000 2.5 CD with 116000 miles on the clock, My intention was to run the car for about 6 mouths and then break it as donor for my Triumph TR7 convertible project.
However its much to nice, everything works and it drives like a dream.

I have had to replace the cam gaskets and plug leads, someone had done a botched job on them, 2 plugs were completely submerged.

The only problem I have now is when I start the engine there is what sound like tappet noise which lasts for about 2 to 3 minutes. Once it clears it sounds fine. All the cams looked fine and the top end of the engine under the covers was very clean no sludge just a nice golden brown.
Any idea?

Phil

Sure it's tappet and not Exhaust manifold gasket? Can sound a little like tappets :y

But you'll lose the V8 sound! A fuel injected V6 just won't be the same  :-/  :-/  :-/

I've had a couple of V8 SD1's, Including a Vitesse and its all down the exhaust But v6 give you a good 20 Bhp more, probably better MPG than the old 2.0 The v8 is great engine but its very old outdated and drinks petrol for fun

Try looking at the valve lifters also. Mine did have these noises before and disappeared after a good oil change. HTH

Hi
My bet is that it's one of the head to exhaust manifold gaskets.  Use a length of hose in one ear, the other end around the manifolds to search for the noise.  If it is that gasket the WSM says to remove the engine or cyl head for access.  That's not necessary, unbolt the appropriate engine mount and tilt the engine over to give access.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.
