Autogearbox programme selector fault... help!!!!!
« on: 22 June 2010, 19:09:45 »

Hi there.. wondering if anyone can assist me.

Got a 1997 2.5 CDX ... fantastic car. Its developed an auto gearbox fault.. this has been on going for a while now but im getting fed up with it!

The car changes up and down automatically in all gears.. except for the most important one of all 'D'!

When 'D' is selected all the LED's light up and then a few mins later there is a 'clunk' and it goes into emergency mode where you have to change gear yourself.

Its fine in all other postions... just 'D'

Took the car to my local independent garage and they have told me it is a programme selector fault.. and the bit from Vauxhall will cost about £270!!

They have given me the part number as 96017511

Can anyone tell me what the actual part is called???

Anyone know anywhere that sells these cheaper??? The car itself is probably only worth £500.. no way am i spending £270 on it!!! Do they come up on eBay much???

Also .. will the gearbox be damaged in anyway if I dont fix it...??? I dont mind driving it in position '3' ... but the fuel economy suffers.

Usually I just drive it in 'D' until it trips out and then continue changing gear manually

When I switch the engine off it resets itself and works fine .. until 'D' is selected!!!

Also the mechanic said there was oil coming from around this part.. is it likely to be some other fault???

Thank you

Dave

Probably the selector mechanism itself .. can be cleaned

read here   : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1267956397

but one from the breakers on here probably better .. have a look in parts for sale ..

That`s the one matey :y Sometimes a stripdown and clean will cure it, if not PM one of the breakers in the parts section for a replacement :)

Thanks guys.. I've looked on this forum before and seen that 'How to' for the selector... I thought the part he was talking about was different somehow.

So is that really the price of these things new????

Seems a bit excessive!!!!!

I stripped and cleaned mine last week hoping to cure the problem , but it hasn't. So no  I am unsure whether that indicates that  it isn't a selector switch problem  or that the switch is so  bad that even cleaning it didn't resolve it. It did look quite worn .  This is a really annoying problem that seems to be a regular feature on here ...  any suggestions  what other fault  may create the same symptoms. It rarely happens starting from cold and driving off but when re-starting after a short trip then it is very likely to go into limp mode in D . If fully warmed up  it rarely happens .
