There is a very good "How-to" on the glovebox handle, not sure about ashtray.

open the ash tray and take out the tray, there is a cut out on the back put cross hed screw driver in and locate the screw, undo screw and wiggel the ash try and it should come out, to fix it you will need a long head flat head, pop the front off it clips on the side but mind the cig lighter as on a runner, when off wind the plastic bar with hand and screw driver 2-3 full turns leave the screw driver in the slots and refit to the rest off the sah tray in sink when all line'd up and screw driver falls out push it closed and see  if its working now, if not try again, if dose refit to the car.

my ash tray cigar lighter / power socket seems. for want of a better phrase, floppy. It still works fine, but seems to have come lose. Could it have come off the 'runners' that present it when you open the ash tray? I guess removing the ashtray as above will reveal ?

it might be the spring do as above  there is a cog in middel were the spring is tightened they can slip off the cog and back on again and the sping will have to be reset.
