3.2 V6 Auto Emissions Fault Codes
« on: 12 July 2010, 20:06:22 »

Whilst driving home tonight the emissions fault light came on and has stayed on (not flashing).

I've done the pedal test, which produced the following codes:

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

Any ideas as to what has thrown these up?  There is no obvious difference to the way the car was running before the light came on.

Cheers.

Common occurence on the 3.2. sensor is between the pre-cat and the main cat and seems to be sensitive on some cars to all sorts of things... its not a matter of IF you get this fault... but WHEN .....

My solution is a code reader/resetter.. when the light comes on .. check the codes .. if its 0420/0430 reset the light and continue ..

As it happens .. mine comes on very regularly ... 3 days after arriving if France, then 3 days after getting back .. it then stays out for the rest of the year !!

Another solution is to move the sensor to behind the main cat... several threads around about that procedure .. :)

It is nothing to worry about, but if you leave the light on it might just hide something important.

Pah, that's normal, don't worry. Emissions will be fine, it won't bother the mot either.

Well thats eased my mind, but I take your point about it hiding another more serious fault.

Is there anyway of resetting it without having access the a code reader?

No unfortunately. Easiest (read cheapest as Vx would recommend new cats!) is to relocate the front 2 lambda sensors. Takes a couple of hours, a welder and 2 x £6 bungs off eGay.

Ok, no worries.  Thanks for the help guys.

Can someone give me the link to the thread that explains this process of moving the sensors please.

Cheers.

Code can be reset with a cheap ELM327 code reader and a laptop ... been there got the t-shirt ... but it is far easier with something like the maxscan ... which is why I bought the thing primarily ...  :)

Nice one!  :y

I assume its the M18 stainless steel boss / bung sets I need?

Do I have to source the copper washers seperately? If so, where from?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lambda-Sensor-Boss-Plug-Steel-Boss-Insert-Bung-/120567162881?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c125ce801

That is similar to the one I fitted to Mark's, albeit slightly more expensive. Washer should come with it. :y
