Oil change after ckeaning breathers - immediately?
« on: 06 August 2010, 21:21:48 »

Hello, I'm planning on replacing cam cover gaskets and cleaning the breathers tomorrow. I've got my can of carb cleaner at the ready and was just wondering why do you have to change the oil after? Will it not just be absorbed and dissolved into the oil, they are both hydrocarbons after all. How soon do you need to change the oil, immediately, or can you get away with it for a tank or so? Thanks!

I would say the carb cleaner will evaporate off before you get round to starting the engine and will be immediately sucked through the now working breather system and burnt. Only issue might be if you have a lot of crud in the separator behind the driver's side head some will inevitably drop into the crank case, so that would be best removed before it can clog the oil pickup.

Oh yeah good point thanks! I didn't think of that. I was going to take the breather box off and clean the inside, I saw a good guide from ABS on doing this, but I think I'll just do it as per the guide on here. Thanks for your help!
