Breather box removal...
« on: 16 August 2010, 19:01:05 »

Would pulling the breather box off the back of the passenger side head require me to replace any gaskets? Just wondering before I pull it off to clean it. All I did before was spray some cleaner into it, but I want to make sure it's clean before reassembling everything.

Seems we have 2 sorts over here, pre face lift has a flap built into a gaskit to block. Face lift has a flap but its seperate in the box itself and uses the same sealer used for the oil cooler cover plate. Which for the catera, i would think, is all you need. if Y32se engine code then sealer, no gaskit, for defo.

tbh, the flaps do very little afaict, so i'd be tempted to remove and fit with grey sealer reguardless.

Mark dtm is more familiar with the cat engine, maybe he'll know for sure.

ah, then originally there would have been a gaskit with a flap incorporated into it, but not sure if there was sealer as well?

a guy from norway posted some pics a week or so ago, maybe he'll pop in, or have a search?

thing is the flap seems to self distruct over time without any ill effect, so i wonder if kts worth bothering with?....... better safe i suppose.

Hope this helps :)
I don't think there were any flap on mine, but the smaller holes on the block (see pic) was full of crud that I scraped away. Might have been some kind of flap there originally.

Well, it looks like I didn't have to pull it off.... Pulled it off and it was nearly spotless. The inside of the box only had a little bit of a oily film on the inside, and that was about it. So I cleaned it a little bit and put it back on.

I will say that the bottom bolts down near the exhaust manifolds were a bear to get back in.... I dropped both of them twice!

Thanks all!

My 98 mini-facelift X30XE had no gasket - just a rubber flap inside as described above and used the grey sealant.
