EGR possibly sticking or not working
« on: 21 August 2010, 10:59:15 »

Hi guys, i took my egr off a while ago to see if i could stop the annoying problem of the car having no power at intermittent points, somtimes it is totally fine, others you floor the accelerator and literally NOTHINGA happens, then when you lift off and reapply it is totally fine again, anyway i took the EGR off and cleaned it very throughly with white spirit etc, i tried to get the little piston to move but i couldnt get it to move at all, in or out or anything, is this normal or should you be able to move the little piece of metal in the housing, im thinking this is why somtimes it doesent work because its partially broken etc, it seemed to have better response after i had cleaned it as it was doing the lack of power thingy much less frequently but id rather it not do it at all, any ideas, i could get a new EGR i suppose, how much are they does anyone know?

Hi
Have a look at Page 84 of the latest issue of Car Mechanics, cover date September.  There's a guy with the same problem as you and a suggested course of action.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

It should move, definitely, i soaked mine in caustic soda (or oven cleaner) to free it up, although it still failed on the car, it at least moved freely, i replaced mine with a second hand one and have had no trouble since, i blanked it off while i was there too.

Replace it to stop it throwing up an error to the ecu because it was too slow in operating, blank it off to prevent it mixing exhaust gases with the inlet, simples... ;D

yes it is but that is not what you want as exhaust gases in your inlet = less power on your outlet.
Loads of people have blanked them off as you cannot remove them completely because the ECU needs to see them connected, even if they are not having any effect, hence the blanking plate... ;)

That's interesting, makes sense as well. I must try this out.
Thank you very much.
