engine wash

i have a 2,2 dti and i want to wash the engine because its a complete mess there but i heard that if i do that i might burn the ecu or somethin like that because all of the electronics there. how can i do it? what do i have to cover??

The diesel injector pump is mounted to the engine block, the pump has an e.c.u. bolted to it, these are fragile enough without dousing them with water, if you decide to cover none of the other electrical connectors on the engine, at least protect the pump...
