TD overheating and no hot air blowing from the fan
« on: 06 September 2010, 15:20:37 »

Hi guys, i have been having a problem with the egr i think so i tried Kneepads tip of unblocking the braided vacuum pipe that goes from under the intake manifold to near to the power steering area ( Im not sure what the techincal term is for the exact area i mean). Anyway i disconnected the pipe at the power steering area end and then blew down it to clear any blockage, there may have been a blockage but its hard to tell. then i put it back on and then drove around a bit, then it fell off so i pushed it back on again, then drove around again, when i was driving it i was pushing the car hard to see if it made any performance increase so the revs were high and then i had it in park and stopped with the revs quite high for a bit, then i look at the dash and the temperature is over 100, so i turn the car off and the fans in the engine area carry on running, i let the car cool down a bit then restarted it, i put on the interior fans and no real warm air came out, i waited for another 30 mins and then  tried again and there was still no real hot air and the temperature gauge was rising much faster then it should have been, it was at around 92 when i turned the car on and started to climb which it wouldnt normally do.

Sorry for the long story just wanted to say exactly what happened, so what do you think the problem is, is it the water pump thats failed due to the high revs and is now overheating the system, is that why i dont have hot air inside anymore, is there anyway to very easily check that the water pump isnt working e.g. removed the hose that leads to the coolant tank and then see if it pumps coolant out of that, when its cold or when its hot, i know its dangerous to play with hot coolant, any other ideas? maybe the engine coolant temperature sensor has gone but this wouldnt explain the lack of hot air would it?

put the heating on in car if no heat comes out then waterpump/blockage,the impellers on these water pumps are not good,as for driving these with a broken waterpump its to risky they have a habit of blowing thw head gasket

ok so heres the plan, 1. let the car cool down completely 2. turn on the engine and just let it idle 3. turn the heater controls on full blast and see if any hot air comes out after a few minutes 4. as this is happening keep an eye on the temperature gauge as it is likely to rise very rapidly because the water pump isnt working.

question?????????????????

how long will it take to tell if no hot air is cominf through the vents

and

how long is it safe to run the engine if the water pump is dead, e.g. is 0-5mins ok etc,

thanks

I wouldnt drive it full stop, as the delay from the engine to the gauge is about 10 seconds, by the time you see it itll be too late. :'(

DON'T run the engine until the pump has been replaced this engine hates overheating and will blow the HG

It is a relatively easy job to change the pump, there is a brilliant 'How to' here:- http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1264071895 ::) ::) ::)

No good just disconnecting the tube at the egr solenoid end, you have to take it off from under the manifold and examine it carefully, that is where it blocks or splits.   :y
