This will not necessarily help you personally geoffr70 as I'm in the south east. But I need a new windscreen as well. See below for the quotes I received. Might give you an idea of the wide range of prices you could pay.
But first as said before, always best to check if you have it covered under insurance, but most people should know this or be able to check easilly by looking at their insurance policy. Even if you have windscreen cover it is quite possible you will still be liable to pay an excess even then. usuall default excess amounts are £100 - £150 depending on vehicle as the cost to the insurance companies will be the full retail cost of replacement (hundreds of pounds - see below).
Now on my part it's not that I'm not insured to drive, just that in 35 years of driving I have only ever once previously had to have a windscreen replaced, until now. So paying a premium for cover that is unlikely to be used is a waste of past beer tokens. I accept that I now need a new windscreen, and I have taken that risk by not taking windscreen cover for 35 years. Never-the-less I still would like a cheap solution and not be ripped off.
Now back to prices for geoffr70's info.
First quote for an Elite tinted with sun visor etc as follows:-
Autoglass - £598 excluding discount for being an RAC member (discount for being RAC member then price would be £449.19)
Autowindscreens.co,uk - £286.17 plus VAT.
Screen-tec windscreens £160 plus VAT.
Budget Windscreens .co.uk £158 plus VAT - £40 more if you need it done on a weekend.
A big difference. Who knows who would do the best job either. You pays you money and takes your choice.
I will say though that the last time I had to have a windscreen replaced, RAC were the cheapest (they had them on special offer and did a very good job. This was 6 years ago on a different car.
The reason why I need my windscreen replaced now is because of all the bloody diesel juggernaughts passing my house. They spew out so much deisel dust (Carbon) which scratches the screen to buggery. Can I sue Royal Mail lorries for the cost?
