Couriering large items
« on: 07 January 2008, 15:58:24 »

After the highly entertaining "postage costs" thread, I thought I'd post one of my own on a similar vein.

I have a spare BMW 850CSi lower valance that fits onto the front bumper. It's been stored in my folks' garage for a while now, and as my 840 already has one fitted I have no need for it so decided to sell it. These are about £600 new and are quite in demand as they can be fitted to standard non-sport models to improve the look.

Enough of the background, I have a guy who wants to buy it (well actually there are a line of people wanting to buy it...) but inevitably he's too far to collect. So I need to courier it, but I've never sent something this large! It's basically the size of a front bumper (not as tall as it's only the lower half), but it's just a plastic outer part so doesn't weigh much -- maybe about 6-8 Kg. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can send this, and how much it will cost?

I need to package it up as well to prevent it getting damaged, any tips here?

Cheers :)

Try this lot http://www.parcel2go.com/

I have used a couple of times without problem.

Less than a tenner a go!

You really MUST put miles of bubble wrap around it Paul. It doesn't weigh anything so wont increase costs but couriers are not the most considerate people.

Good advice, of this I know. My biggest concern is that something heavy ends up plonked right in the middle of it, potentially breaking it. It's plastic so will have some give, but obviously not designed to be bent! I am considering strapping some wood or similar across the length of it to prevent this, is it worth the effort?

PS regards Parcel2go, I'm sure they have size limits that this will breach.

I would label it everywhere saying "fragile", I know the couriers will prob ignore it - but they might... might take a bit more care with it!

Isleworth, Middlesex. So quite a trek from Edinburgh (well SW Scotland actually, it's at my folks' place).

Hi Markie

Dimensions are: 1700 x 650 x 250 mm

These have been rounded up so it should still fit within those sizes once packaged. If you can sort something out that would be great.

Many thanks :y
