rear door permanently locked
« on: 14 September 2010, 15:26:04 »

A few weeks back I had to manually push down the button to lock the rear L/H door, it did unlock via the C/L system. The button has now become  permanently fixed in the locked position and is held down I assume by the locking motor. If I disconnect the battery, or which fuse is best to remove to power down the C/L system to release the lock, will this work?

In a word ..... no!  ;) The motor needs to release the lock. Try as Robson has suggested & help the button up as you unlock via the central locking.

Finally succeeded to get it to release, tried lots of strong pull ups and working c/l with key at same time with no success,so decided to get serious and called in wife to operate key,I thought I'll now be able to concentrate on increasing upward pullpower,so applied a very steady prolonged pull and then released it to show my wife how to work the key.I pressed the key buttons and hey presto it unlocked and relocked then unlocked to key command, it has however returned to a fixed position,I think of manual  control only. So I'm now going to replace the lock with referance to maintenance guides by Kevin Woods, Tunnie, and Mark Jay. I did this job a few yrs ago (my pre-forum days)  and if you forget broken plastic and a lot of cursing I did manage it ok.Got a feeling this time I'll do ok,and no cursing :y

Robson was yours a front door? Mine was a rear door turns out there is no info to cover the rear doors. They are nearly the same as the front, with one exception there's a sneaky secret fixing in the bottom of the grab well beneath a rubber blanking plug, took some finding as the screw is in a vertical plane,so I thought it worth a mention, apart from this job went ok,if slowly as you said :y

I had a locked rear door problem which was nothing to do with the door lock motor.  The door had been a bit problematic since the car was new.  It would often not open from outside, but if I bumped it from outside with my backside, while lifting the handle it would then open.  It was always possible to open it from the inside though. Eventually it failed to open and as luck would have it that was after I had set the child locks so that it wouldn't open from inside.

So, with a cut off hacksaw blade, after checking the position on the other door, I was able to move the child lock lever from inside the car and get the door open.

Then took off the inside door lining, and found inside the door, that a plastic nut, which has to be positioned so that it engages with the outside operating lever, had moved on its spindle (because the internal thread had stripped or not been sufficiently well engaged).

The solution was to screw the nut to the correct position and put superglue on the threads.  There has been no problem since then.

I'd like to add a photo, but don't know how to do that.
