Auto box oil changed
« on: 02 October 2010, 09:13:57 »

Finally got round to having my auto box oil changed, £100 all in at 'Tameside Transmissions' http://www.gearsandclutches.co.uk/

It seems to change gear better and run better unless its in my head.

142,221 miles the car has done so it was probably well overdue an auto box oil change.

The reason I had it done was; it needed it doing due to the mileage, and when slowing from 30 either 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st somewhat banged in to gear.

After the oil change and a 10 mile drive around town to see if it would do it again it only did it once (maybe the oils not got round yet).

I'll give it another go today to see if it still does it.

If it does then I am open for suggestions to what is causing it to 'bang' when changing down. On 'one' occasion it point blank refused to change up a gear and did after a while and banged in to 2nd gear. To be honest maybe I confused the auto box due to the driving stile at the time and going down hill then up hill.

Rear diff could be on the cards as the next option as it looks like the rear seal has gone (no major leak though). http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1161520937

and to be honest the bang sound seems to come from the rear and not the centre where the g/box is.

If box related, oil change is first port of call obviously. Then seems to be the 2nd to 3rd gear shift solenoid that takes a hammering. Jpat for auto box parts maybe? Not sure they do solenoids though, they could not supply them for a Volvo c70 I had aggro with. It's not a hard job as the valve body with the solenoids in is exposed during the oil change when removing both sumps.

I suppose it depends on the banging. Often described as a loud thump or banging when engaging D or changing gear...on my old 2.5 auto the thump when engaging D from neutral, did sound like it was coming from the dif, I assume when the gear engages suddenly and any drive train slack is taken up. Oil change fixed that noroblem.

Although re oil change it's worth double checking they got the oil level right. Did they engage all gears with engine running and box up to temp. as the level hole was filled...?

There is a guide on checking the box oil level in maintanance if you have not seen it already.

Might be worth getting under the car with the gearbox in neutral and checking how much backlash you have in the diff by turning the propshaft.

While you're down there check the propshaft UJs, centre support bearing and driveshafts for play.

Plenty of ramps on ebay, there is a pair ending tonight, in Cheshire - £2.20 at the moment.  :P  Loads to be found cheap at car boot sales too.  :y

Ramps alone are too steep for any omega, bumper is in the way...

Will need some sort of extensions to give a less steep transition on the the top of the ramps.

Ramps are horrible things, haven't used them for years as they would never stay still long enough to get the car up them - not an Omega as the nose gets in the way as stated. Now if I had a 2 or 4 post lift....? No chance at all that 'she' would go for that!  :(
