Its probably the most common cause of breakdown on the Omega, due to the proximity of the wiring to the exhaust manifold.
Iirc they cost about £60.
If you install a new one, have a read of the relevant guide first. The wiring needs to be routed in a different way to stop the same happening again. No need to bother removing the old one from the car, just disconnect it and leave it there. Hth. :y

That def. sounds like crank sensor, very common fault on these cars.

You may find when you go back to it, it will start.

EXACT same issue on mine - sometimes won't start in the morning, then will, then fine all day and won't see it again for a couple of weeks
this morning its decided not to start ever! :-)  - I'll be doing a CPS monday morning then - still, beats working.

The 55 is somewhat worrying...  ...I've only ever seen this on chipped 3.0l if the ignition is left on too long before starting. This invariably does not prevent starting, but does bring on EML.

If the car is not chipped, its possible this is a genuine ECU failure (unheard of to be honest), or an old code from a previous glitch (have you paperclipped it before and had a 55?).

I would still be inclined to change crank sensor, and go from there.

My 2.5 is onto it's third crank sensor in 12 years, I recently found the second one still in place though not connected (obviously), got me thinking what the hell is this and why isn't it connected? Will be removing it at earliest opportunity as I don't like the idea of duff parts cluttering up the engine bay - am I being too fussy?  ;)

I changed the sensor on my first Mig as the original was starting to give problems, but hadnt completely given up the ghost. I left the original in place as a spare for an emergency if I ever needed it. Might be worth trying your "spare" one before removing it completely. ;)
