Automatic Gearbox Fault
« on: 03 October 2010, 17:21:05 »

Hi,

My Omega 3.0 has just shown Automatic Gearbox warning on the screen and it sticks in 3rd or 4th gear all the time.

I can manually change gear using the selector.

Is there a simple solution to this, or am I looking at major expense ?

Thanks in advance

Phil

Does it work o,k once youve turned the car off & on again?. when the warning comes up it goes into limp mode which is like being in 3rd gear all the time, you can drive it manually although it aint nice as the changes are horrible, either way i would check your ATF level in the box before worrying too much. :y

Yeah it's fine every time I start it until I get to 3rd and then it stays there.
I'll check my fluid and cross myfingers.

Thanks for the advice.

If it still does it after checking ATF. check inside the selector switch. They often get dirt inside and give problems. :y

Had a similar problem on my 2.5 after a fluid change etc... it was much better but still occasionaly thumps between second and third. Where is the selector switch and how do you get to it?

the switch is on the n/side of the g/box, although your thumping could be caused by a duff soleniod. :y

Thanks, when I get the time I will investigate the selector first and see if there are any obvious visible signs of a problem.  :y

are the selector lights flashing?

I've just come back from town and the gears have worked perfectly with no warning on the screen.

YES. The selector lights ALL light up to start with and then after I select drive the "3" light is on for several seconds of driving and then "D"  only is lit.

In Park, ALL lights are on.

Where EXACTLY is the selector switch and what does it look like, so I can check it. Please be as precise as you can, as I may be many things, but a mechanic is definitely NOT one of them.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Regards

Phil

yup it sounds like the switch alright, if you jack up the car on the passenger side (& support it) then look just back from the bellhousing youll see the switch (it might be under a tin cover),pop that off & in the middle of the switch there is a big nut (16mm i think)remove that, then there are 2 x10mm mounting bolts one of which is tricky to see, once switch is removed check that the nylon cam (hole) on the switch isnt cracked as this can happen & cause problems, after that follow the link from Kneepad,,,good luck. :y :y  (its an easy job honestly!)
