diff probs on 2.5
« on: 21 October 2010, 13:52:41 »

Had my car in my local garage this morn for a noise on rear end (this has been questioned on here previously) and he's just told me that the noise is coming from the diff. when he's had it up on the ramp he's been able to get hold of it and theres play in it which he says is the cause of the noise - someone did actually mention on here that this is what it could be.
Here's the nasty bit, when i asked him how much he said he could probly pick up a second hand 1 for around £140+vat, and that wasn't even off a 2.5, it was from a 2.2?? and on top of that would be around £100 for labour.
Does anyone have 1 for sale for a lot less than this or is that the going rate for this item and is he charging over the odds for fitting it? How big a job is it? :-/

You need to make sure you get one with the right ratio.

How much play are we talking about - and how much noise?

Diffs don't often cause problems. Have you checked the basics like the diff oil level?

If all else fails there are always folk breaking cars on here and I think you'll find one for significantly less. £100 labour is probably not too bad but one of our mobile mechanics might well do better.

Thanks for that,
his exact words were that he go hold of it with his 'helper' and they could push it upwards which showed quite alot of play.
The noise has been happening for several months now and appears once you drive off and release the pedal, ie, when on any road doing a constant speed - motorway driving / in cruise control, and also when slowing down. the faster you go the faster the noise and visa versa. as described in previous posts its likened to that of the noise made when a child has something attached to a bicycle wheel to make that clicking noise - (sorry, thats the best way of describing it). when posted previously i was advised to have the prop and diff checked as they may be dry. the mechanic says he's checked these and they seem ok!
Its nothing to do with the rear brakes as the discs and pads were replaced last month.
whats these mobile mechanics you mention, (sorry, i'll rephrase that - i know what a mobile mechanic is just that i wasn't aware that there were any that specialised in omegas )
are there any around the Manchester area or even closer that may be able to help or assist?? :-/

OK, presumably there's play at the input or output flanges as opposed to a little backlash. Not good.

Darth Loo-knee or Elite Pete might be able to help. Not too far from you. I suggest dropping them a PM.

There was a diff on ebay earlier today, 99p start and no bids.  Think its finished now.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

I had a few carltons that had diff noise when the mileage crept up, its actually a real easy job to do, making sure you get the right kind tho.

that way the splines on the shafts will fit, ratios correct etc.

£140+vat is a rip off for a 2.5 diff, and 100 labour is about right if it takes him 4hrs to do!!  >:(

the guy at local garage has know said he reckons its the bearings that have gone and says its more expensive to repair them than it is to replace the whole diff...
i'm baffled and aint got a bloody clue !!
