Annoying software problem
« on: 13 January 2008, 19:33:34 »

As you may have read in a previous post, I have recently bought a Logitech Quickcam Messenger. I downloaded the driver software from Logitech as required then installed it before connecting the webcam. When the cam is connected, Windows (2K) goes through the usual "Found new hardware" hardware routine and correctly identifies all the components. If I then ignore the "You need to restart" message, the webcam works fine (great in Skype, BTW), but if I let Windows reboot, I get a blue screen telling me that I have a PnP driver fault etc. I then have to reboot in safe mode and go through all the palaver of removing the webcam driver software (via contraol panel "add/remove programs" option).

I don't understand how the cam can work perfectly but then have a problem every time I reboot. :-?

It's doing my head in!! >:(

Exactly.  If not the logitech ones, then the USB ones.

order of drivers loaded may effect..

from bios try disabling some unused ports such as Com2 , paralel port..

but if its not an original driver for W2K this may also cause problem :-/

Do PnP devices etc from USB still require individual IRQ addresses? Or does the entire USB Bus just have the one IRQ?

Dont think so, imagine it's like SCSI, Host controller handles the PC's IRQ and has the necessary logic to run the bus and devices connected to it.

Entire USB bus uses only one IRQ..Unless a specific design..or add on card..

also it can be shared with another device..But this can cause some

problems with a high data streaming device (ie usb camera)

depending on the op.system..

And some drivers for these devices are really crap and create

problems with other drivers..

The USB controller requires one.  The USB controller will have multiple USB ports. A motherboard may have multiple USB controllers.

Does that make sense?

Any driver written for XP should support Steering, so sharing should not be an issue (ignoring perfomance), though occasionally 2 drivers don't get on with each other.
