Posted a few weeks ago about a weird sound I heard just at a certain rev.

The sound was coming from the cam cover.

I have totally isolated the sound to the water pump, so it looks like the bearings have dried up in the water pump, possibly explaining an inch loss of water in 2 months (or just general small loss of water).

When I have the cam belt kit fitted i'll have the water pump replaced, i'm sure it will last another 9K as its only just started doing it.

I'll post up on here when I reach 152K, i'll need the cam belt doing, tensioners, kit and water pump. Again I have read somewhere that someone does this, is it Elite Pete?

9k! that's hopefull depends on how much you want peace of mind driving it i suppose and if you have a good tow company to mind!! personally i would change it now as 9 k is a long way to go on a faulty pump but that's  imho!

but, if it fails you will loose power steering/alternator/air con & water circulation causing a near instant overheat. & doesnt take long to bugger the engine. not that bad a job tbh.

As a stop gap, you could flip the dust seal out of the bearing & re-pack it with a little grease. Doing so won't fix a goosed bearing, but it might prolong it's life a bit. You really don't want your 'fan belt' to break, mine snapped the other week, and as The Red Barron said, the temp goes to the red in a very very short time.

By the time you've got the pump out you might just as well replace it.

If I were you I'd change the cam belt and water pump now. Once something like this starts to deteriorate, especially if water is getting into the bearings, it will go downhill fast. Could water be leaking into the cam belt area and affecting the tensioner pulleys?

A breakdown and recovery from the side of the road could be a darn sight more costly than bringing forward the cam belt by 9k.

Change it NOW ... it is not unheard of for the water pump, as it fails, to cause the auxbelt that drives it to inflict damage to the cambelt ... and that is a scenario that is worth avoiding at all costs.....

I will get it done when I save up £225! 

Got a goo goo ga ga on the way so money is tight!

Plus the car is only worth £600! (believe it or not).

Ooops! :-? Just re-read the fault, it' a squawking water pump, I'd assume squawking aux belt tensioner!

new belt and tensioner so not them unless defective new ones.

defo sounds like its coming from the pump.

are you sure its the water pump making the noise and that its not coming from the timing belt tensioner/guide pulleys because if one of them lets go you will be into a bigger headache

My previous 2.5 did this. Started making odd noises and was losing a little water. Diagnosed as the water pump. I decided to leave it as I was selling that car and it wasnt going to fetch much. Drove about 500 miles , by that point it was making a lot more noise and I was topping the water up every day.

I then picked up my 3.0 and sold the 2.5 on ebay advising the buyer that it was pissing out water and couldnt be driven far. He called me 15 mins after collecting the car , sat on the hard shoulder with a siezed engine. Pump had seized but he decided to carry on. Oops !

Best get it done sooner rather than later.
