Auto box problem
« on: 30 November 2010, 15:47:52 »

Hi Guys,
Here's the problem,50 mph then select sports mode. Everything ok so far, accelerate to about 80 mph, lift off, coast for a bit, then revs drop, sports light goes out, gearbox warning light on, limp home mode.Fault code tells me 10*3*10*10 which i think is "random misfire". Stop, turn off engine, remove key. wait 10 mins then start as normal , all ok. arrrrrrrgh, please any ideas

1 theory is "ignition problem", higher revving maybe poss plug/s or coil breaking down or could it be something to do with overrun as I back off, would this show as "random misfire"

The symptoms I assume include gearbox appearing to have disengaged. Sports mode etc will have nothing to do with it I suspect. There are quite a few similar posts on here regarding auto box faults.

Usually the remedies recommended on here is to check/replace ATF and filter - may also be crank sensor breaking down in my view. Suggest you just keep an eye on it - how many times has this happened? What mileage on gearbox?

I thought crank sensor would give me lumpy tickover, uneven running or possible cutting out.I will change the ATF as soon asap, would low fluid level give these symptoms, does the gearbox have an oil temp sensor?.

That confirms my suspicions, whether in sports mode or not, higher revs, it will go into lhm. Also thermostat stuck open so running cold, could it be over fuelling on the over run then getting a misfire sending it into lhm.
