Steering box compatibility
« on: 04 December 2010, 16:41:03 »

Following on from my earlier post about a leaking steering box I have been sent a replacement from a breakers via the internet.  I quoted the GM part number on my 1998 2.5 V6's box, 90 538 729, but was sent a unit bearing the number 24 460 153 - I believe this may be from a 2.6 V6, possibly a 2001 model if the '0601' number also stamped on the plate means June 2001.  The ZF number on each box is almost identical, though my original finishes with 122 and the later box finishes with 124.

Can anyone confirm whether the boxes are identical/ interchangeable before I start the job?

Outwardly the boxes look the same (I can't be 100% sure as one is still on the car), though the later one doesn't seem to have the same seal/ dust cover between the bottom of the shaft and the pitman arm.  When I spoke to the guy at the breakers (Vx specialists) on the phone he didn't seem particularly interested in the part number, just whether or I wanted one with or without a sensor.  Box looks good so I'm hoping I can use it, but can anyone confirm this for me please.
