Hi all i have a 2.2 diesel and there is a noise that sounds like a fan or motor that is running in front of the drivers side wheel i can only hear it whaen the engine is not running but may it runs with the engine also. Today when i switched off the engine i could still hear it on looking at the car ther was smoke comming out infront of the drivers side front wheel (not water on brakes) what is the thing thats running also would this item cause the smoke??????

It's a diesel powered heater. It heats the coolant up when the outside temp. drops below a certain level.

Yes it will run for a while after you switch off, nothing to worry about.
The smoke if from the pre-heater exhaust, also nothing to be concerned about.
Most people are worried cause thiers don't work.
You are one of the lucky ones.   ;)

if you want to remove it i will be more than happy to use it :P... it should not run for that long.. try to get a diagnostic, but i suspectthat his temp sensor is busted and does not recognise the temp of the engine cooling liquid
