hi guys.  i finally managed to get a new engine for my omega.  i have got it fitted, but there's a couple of issues.  firstly when removing the engine, the lambda sensor got snagged and pulled the wires out.  which order do they go in, as the wire colours on the sensor don't match the ones on the car.  the sensor colours are red, yellow, black and something else, can't remember at present, possibly white, but i'll check and repost.

another thing was that the cam sensor had a different plug on it so mine didn't fit.  can i cut and splice in the different plug to my loom, or would i be better fitting the sensor from the old engine.  i'm assuming the different one would be a revised/better design (?)

lastly, when i took it for a test drive, the autobox didn't appear to be working properly.  it held first gear for ages, then seemed to go into top and stay there.  it struggles to move on a very slight incline, and wouldn't move off at all from a standstill unless on level ground.  the MID has autobox on the fault list.

how do i go about getting g-box fault codes?  are there any common faults that would cause this?

the car is a v reg cd 2.0 auto.  it has been sitting for about three years not working if this makes a difference (though the engine was in dailly use until last week in it's previous car)

The lack of a cam sensor will put gearbox in limp. Fix the cam sensor issue (and other sensor probs) :)

ahh, i didn't realise the g-box went into limp mode when the engine did. going to check some new lambda sensors to see what the wiring does and fix mine.  the wires haven't broken, just pulled out along with the plug pins so should just push back in.  will just stick the cam sensor off the old engine for now, and that shoud be everything working properly then hopefully.

right managed to get the engine running sweet, but still got autobox fault on the MID and it's only running in what seems to be third gear, although i'm getting other gears if selected manually.

any ideas what might be causing this?  i've heard about the selector on the gearbox itself gettin full of crud and causing problems, although the car hasn't run for several years.

which pins do i need to use to get g-box faults with a paperclip test? might give me some answers.

that's annoying.  i did used to have a list of pins for paperclip tests on the cav, and there were ones for engine, abs and automatic box.  i assumed it would be the same for this one.  that's irritating. 

so what are the usual suspects for problems with the gbox?  the selector ful of crud i understand usually results in the lights all coming on or flashing on the quadant inside.

meant to say, the sports button and winter buttons don't work either, although i assume they probably don't in limp mode.

i'm not getting the warning light on the dash, just the message on the MID.

Check ATF level & if all OK, clean the selector switch

ATF should be fine as i filled it after the engine change.  turned engine on, then opened the fill/level plug and filled until it started to come out, then replaced plug.  will check it again just for the sake of it then will try the selector cleaning.

For the life of me I cannot remember if disconnecting engine ECU on the Simtec unit clears codes. Certainly later ECUs store codes in NVRAM.

Not a member near you with a code reader?

couldn't tell you if there's anyone nearby with a reader tbh.

i certainly used to clear codes on the cav by pulling the battery for a while, usually overnight if i remembered, but an hour or so usually did it.  that was on an M reg though, although everything *looks* identical.  don't know if it would be the same on a V. will try it anyway.  worth a shot if nothing else.  chucking it down here just now, so not too keen on getting under the car for now!

disconnected the battery for a couple of hours, and it seems to have done the trick.  haven't driven it yet but there is no message displayed on the MID and the sport and winter buttons are working now.  next step is to test drive again and see what happens.
