ashtray insert

anyone know how my ashtray goes back together? here's some pics the second pic shows it apart!

Are you sure that the 'wire in the picture is anything to do with your ashtray? I don't think it is. I've just removed my ashtray from my PRE facelift (for the first time in over 7 years  :-?) The whole thing looks very similar but the spring that closes the top flap is more like a mouse trap spring and it lives on the very left hand side. You can see a short (5mm?) long detent where a leg of the spring sits. The diameter of the spring is similar to that from a ball point pen.


(I'll photo mine  ::))


I can't find my camera  :'(, but the spring on my Astra G's ash tray is very similar, although the flap stays as part of the centre console when you remove the ash tray.

thanks andy i had a suspicion this paper clip looking thingy had nothing to do with it so i need to serch for a spring!, oh that's going to be a pita! oh yes i see the indent!

Looks like a previous owner had tried to 'papaer clip' you car.  ::)  ::)  ;) then threw it in the ashtray when it didn't work.  ;)
A Biro?  ;D
I'd get another ashtray? Do you even need it?

biro ;D stranger things have happenend! no i don't really need it it's just i like to have things right but i'm sure this is one thing i can live without!!

result went to the car to have a nosey and found the spring straight off now my dash and stereo install is finally complete don't know how many rattles yet but time will tell ;D thanks for your help Andy :y
