I have what sounds like a beating collapsing on the air con pump on my 3.0 MV6. Engine sounds fine when temp control is on auto and pump is engaged, however if u turn heaters off completely so compressor disengages it starts rattling and making horrible noises. Rev engine and noise quieten down but then comes back. Turn heaters back on and pump engages and is quiet again.

My question is are these easy to come by and can this be changed by me or will it need to go into a garage for degassing prior to being removed. Also can it be driven whilst out of gas??

Sounds like the bearing in the pulley.
In theory they can be changed without removing the compressor, a special puller is used to withdraw the complete pulley and the old bearing can then be pressed out. In practice there is very little room to get the puller and re-insertion tools in there. Try your local a/c specialist, they should have the tools to do the job.
In the short term you can fit a shorter aux belt, missing out the a/c compressor....either listed as V6 without a/c or (I think this is correct....a 2.0 with a/c will fit).
