Sounds like a good deal. Like any other car this age there will be a huge range of them in various conditions. It can be difficult finding a properly looked after one, and personally I'm of the opinion that it's worth paying a bit more up front, otherwise you'll pay it later in repairs anyway and have all the hassle to boot.

A well kept E39 is a great car to drive, especially the 540i/6 Sport which is becoming a bit of a bargain these days (c. £5k).

540i with sport package is really impressive..I can buy one..But here  yearly tax and insurance can buy a small car every year..

Yep, I've owned one before I got the 840. On anything but a track it's very close to the M5 -- 100 BHP down and less sophisticated suspension, but it's basically the same V8 block with a smaller capacity and without the fancy heads/sump, and identical gearbox AFAIK. Very nice car to drive, carries 5 in comfort and very stealthy too -- I surprised a few cars in that
