Testing the self levelling pump
« on: 12 April 2011, 18:10:11 »

On my old Elite I would frequently hear the pump going for a short while after I had started the engine. On my 2.6 Elite I don't think I have heard it yet. The suspension looks and acts fine but I want to know that it is working as I am returning to caravanning. Is there an easy way to test it?  :y

Easiest way to be sure it is pumping air is to jack-up the rear of the car slightly so you can get your hand into the back of the wheel arch..make sure you put an axle stand under as well just to be safe and avoid accidents.

Reach up to the top of the shocker and remove the little metal tang that holds on the air valve connetion to the nipple on the shocker.

Turn on ignition and you should be able to hear and feel a steady flow of air comming through the end of the pipe.If satisfied air is coming out refit back on shocker...your compressor is working.

You should also be able to see the rear end slightly lift when you turn on ignition..only a few cms but it should move..that will prove you shock bellows are inflatting.

rather than unplugging airlines from shockers, the easiest way to to get the assistance of wife/friend/neighbour/etc to sit/stand in the boot & start the car. The back of the car will lift .............. or not.  ;) ;) ;)

Did as suggested but no noise of pump working and no air coming through! Next step - further checks including the fuse.
Will the pump off a 98 2.5 fit a 2002 2.6 if required?  :y

Next step is to have a good look at the fuse, worth fitting new one just to be sure.

I have read the pump does tend to almost cease up if not working due to its exposed mounting so again worth removing and giving it a good clean and checking nothing is obstructing its movement.

Sorry but unable to answer question about different pumps across range/years being compatable, but have seen several different part numbers of replacements on fleabay so expect not.

According to EPC there are 3 pumps ..

one for :

COMPRESSOR, REAR SUSPENSION LEVELLING DEVICE 20SE, X20SE, X20XEV, Y22XE, Z22XE, X25XE, Y26SE, X30XE, Y32SE

Part no ... 22153583

one for :

COMPRESSOR, REAR SUSPENSION LEVELLING DEVICE U25TD, X25TD  (early models)

part No .. 22153582

and one for :

COMPRESSOR, REAR SUSPENSION LEVELLING DEVICE X20DTH, Y22DTH, U25TD, X25TD, Y25TD (later models)

part no.. 22175324

So .. as far as I can tell .. all petrol models use the same one.

Albs is breaking a petrol elite .. don't know if he still has the compressor .. worth a PM ??

Think thats right anyhow .. :)

Some stories have a happy ending!
Checked the fuse, it was intact but both prongs looked a little dull / oxidised, cleaned them up and a few minutes later there was the 'delightful' sound of the pump working  ;)

Interestingly, when i disconnected the air line to one of the rear shocks there was a loud hiss of escaping air and then nothing. The pump did not start and there was no air coming through the line. Did the same test on my old Eilte, I know that the self levelling systems works on this - same result.  :-?
