Paper Clip test won't work?
« on: 17 May 2011, 18:06:59 »

Hi folks. My 2.0 16v Ecotec omega has developed an annoying fault where it can suddenly lose revs, or (as of this morning) cut out completely whist driving along and taking several attempts to restart.

I have successfully used the paperclip test in the past to diagnose a faulty cam sensor but for some reason it won't work any more. I have tried various 'grades' of paperclip and followed the guide to the letter, but no flashing after the engine light goes out.  so...

Any idea what the fault may be?

Any idea why the PC test won't work?

The cam sensor was a genuine VX siemens - I'm wondering about a crank sensor on the way out (it is the original one and now on 120K).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Later 4-pots using 4 digit codes will only flash the light if codes are present

Thanks Rob, that sounds encouraging.

Any ideas about what might be causing the problem then? All is not well, so I'm surprised (although reassured) that no fault codes are showing ...

Could possibly be crank sensor as they don`t always throw a code

Does it only cut out at idle or on overrun? If so, I'd clean icv and throttle body and breathers

Usually while I'm driving down the motorway! Idle is more or less ok, although I do occasionally get a fluctuating idle when pulling up at junctions etc. I'll give the breathers a once over at the weekend and the usual ICV / throttle body 'service' too, just to rule this out...

3" split in the air inlet hose between the air flow sensor and the throttle body. D'oh!
