Headgasket?
« on: 11 June 2011, 11:25:28 »

Hi guys. Been driving the omega trouble free for about 2000 miles now if you ignore the autobox not working.  Went out to the shop last night, a few miles away. The engine was still warm when i left but there was loads of traffic from people using the village as a shortcut to rockness so sat in traffic for about 15 minutes.

During this time i noticed the teperature rising fast. I thought maybe the fan had stopped working so put the heater on full to try and cool things down a bit. Was getting cold air for about 5 minutes before it started coming through hot. When i got back home the radiator hoses were very hot and were solid but the radiator was cold for the most part. Quite hot along the bottom though. The exp tank was empty. I opened tge lid and water started shooting through the top of the rad and filled the tank.

I left it to cool down for am hour or so then filled with water. it appeared to be pretty much dry. Ran the engine up to temp. The fan came on at tge right temp and kept things sitting level. No water out the exhaust to speak of. Radiator was hot all over, no mayo in the oil or water but the hoses were rock hard again.

Does tgis sound like a HG failure? Engine runs perfectly with plenty of power. Haven't had a chance to do a compression test but will do today before 12 so i can get a new gasket ordered before the old boy finishes work.

Just looking for suggestions as to what else it could be. Water pump, stuck thermostat etc though im tending towards HG.

Recap. Very little coolant seemed to be left but no apparent leaks. No water from exhaust no oil in water or vice versa hoses solid

Hmmm did a compression test got 5 psi per cylinder. Think my tester is oppsed. First time ive used it but bought it a few years ago so thats a pain. Engine running sweet so cant possibly be 5 psi. All the other cars are diesel so cant test the tester........

Did you wedge the throttle wide open before testing?

Ahhh. That would be what i forgot to do.  That was daft! Where about is the coolant level sensor by the way? Took the car to the shop to see if id lose any coolant and the MID told me to check coolant. It was sitting on a side slope when i filled it last night. Topped it up and the message disappeared.  The sensor has been in the expansion tank lid in every vx ive had including the last omega.

Ps i didnt lose any coolant on the way to the shop and back and the temp sat steady at about 85-90 even on the 1:4 hill up to the cottage. Odd.

the sensor is the float inside the the expansion tank and connections for it are under the tank  :y

i wonder whether you had a blockage or airlock of some kind and when you released the cap and it spurted out, the pressure going round either removed the blockage or got rid of the airlock
i would top up correctly making sure heater is set to hot then keep an eye on over the next few days  :y

That would explain why i couldnt find it haha.

Hopefully it was just an airlock, and even more so i hope nothings been damaged by the overheating. It didn't get over 100 degrees by the gauge but if there was air around the sensor it could have been much hotter. The plugs were really white. Will do another compression test with the throttle open tgis time!

Still getting 5psi with throttle wide open so definately the gauge thats knackered. 25 quid well spent. Anyway will just have to keep an eye on it and see what happens.
